Stewartia pseudocamellia wordt in het nederlands ook wel schijncamelia of boomcamelia genoemd. Het is een kleine bladverliezende sierboom met een zuilvormige tot piramidale habitus, vaak meerstammig en in de beginjaren traaggroeiend. De bladeren zijn elliptisch, getand, bronskleurig in de lente, donkergroen in de zomer en rood tot paars in de herfst. Van juni tot en met augustus bloeit deze boomcamellia met licht geurende witte camelia achtige bloemen met goudgele tot oranje meeldraden. Deze boom houdt van een standplaats in de halfschaduw.
