De Atriplex halimus is de perfecte plant voor de kust. Schept een exotische sfeer. De mooi glanzend grijze zeemelde weerstaat de ergste stormen en zoutspray. Atriplex halimus  (zoutmelde)  is zeer geschikt voor de kuststreek. Halfwintergroene struik wordt tot 1.5 m hoog. De Atriplex halimus bloeit van juli tot oktober. De bladeren hebben een aangename zoutsmaak en kunnen aan salades worden toegevoegd.
