Caragana arborescens (erwtenstruik) kan maximaal tot zes meter hoogte uitgroeien. De erwtenstruik is sterk, verdraagt extreme koude en hitte en is daarom een struik waar iedere tuinbezitter mee op safe speelt. De bloei met losse trossen, bleekgele bloemen tussen de lichtgroene bladen, begint halverwege het voorjaar en kan tot aan het begin van de zomer voortduren. Een erwtenstruik bloeit het beste na een zeer koude winter, gevolgd door een warme zomer. Sommige soorten bloeien behalve met citroengele ook met roodachtige tot oranjekleurige bloemen. Na de bloei verschijnen in de herfst geelachtige, lange peulen aan de struik.
