De kogelbloem, Cephalanthus occidentalis, lijkt wel toverballen te hebben. Zijn ‘kogels’ verkleuren in het seizoen van groen, wit, roodbruin tot donkerpaars. Het is een echte heester voor liefhebbers. Hij is afkomstig uit de moerassen van Noord–Amerika en wordt in ons land maar weinig geplant. Toch misstaat hij niet in een vasteplantenborder. Hier valt hij erg op vanwege de kogelronde bloeiwijze. Als de bollen ontstaan zijn ze in eerste instantie gesloten en nog groen. Vervolgens openen de bloemen zich waarbij de meeldraden eruit steken als een soort spelden op een speldenkussen. De bol is dan crèmewit van kleur en ruikt heerlijk zacht naar honing.
