Lespedeza Thunbergii is een middelgrote bladverliezende struik of halfheester met breed opgaande vorm en afhangende boogvormige takken. Hij bloeit vrij laat, van augustus tot september met grote roospaarse bloemtrossen, later gevolgd door kleine bruine elliptische zaadpeultjes, die slecht 1 zaadje bevatten. De bladeren zijn elliptisch, drietallig en blauwgroen aan de bovenzijde en grijsgroen en behaard aan de onderkant. De Lespedeza houdt van een standplaats in volle zon of halfschaduw en in neutrale, zure tot licht kalkhoudende grond. De plant bloeit op éénjarig hout en mag ieder jaar flink teruggesnoeid worden. Hij is redelijk winterhard, maar jonge takken kunnen wel wat invriezen.
