Sinocalycanthus  chinensis  is een blad verliezende heester die 2 tot 3 meter hoog kan worden, met een wat warrig karakter. De takken zijn grijzig licht bruin. De bladeren zijn licht groen elliptisch tot eivormig, en kunnen wel 20 cm lang worden. Belangrijk voor de sierwaarde zijn de zeer opvallende alleenstaande bloemen die vanaf eind mei tot eind juni verschijnen, met een tweede bloei rond half augustus. De witte bloemen, zijn 7 tot 10 cm groot en hebben een crème-geel met lichtroze hart. Ze verschijnen op het nieuwe hout en doen me aan de bloem van een Camellia  denken.  Eind van de zomer komen er zaaddozen aan de struik te hangen.
